- Fedor Emelianenko's win over Brett Rogers on Saturday night came at a cost as the Russian heavyweight will miss four-to-six months with tendon damage in his left thumb and a fractured nose.
The Ukrainian-born fighter stopped Rogers in a second-round technical knockout, closing the victory with a right-handed punch before pouncing on Rogers to deliver a left-right combination on the canvas before the referee ended the fight.
The injury is a setback for MMA fans who were hopeful of a heavyweight showdown between Emelianenko and current UFC champion Brock Lesnar. The other stumbling block was contractual obligations, but Emelianenko's camp was hopeful he would be able to fight in the UFC at some point, according to the L.A. Times. Such a timetable will certainly be postponed, as Emelianenko still has two fights on his contract with Strikeforce.
It was expected his next bout would be against Fabricio Werdum, who won a decision Saturday over Antonio Silva. A matchup between those two was one Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said "made a lot of sense." And I thought Fedor would've taken on Overeem next, but I guess Coker is trying to protect his champ longer. | |
