I am not sayin she can't sing because I don't like her songs. I am sayin she is not a great vocalist and she sells her stuff with her image.

Perhaps, but that's what the Pop industry is about: being Popular, either through Image, Music or both

Lady Gaga is a good vocalist. CJ, you have no basis for saying otherwise. Go on Youtube and watch her sing 'Speechless' live as she plays the piano. She is a powerful singer, one who writes all her own songs unlike a lot of pop artists. Has she gone way over the top and negated what attractiveness she had when she first came out? Yes.

But go back to the 'Just Dance' and 'Pokerface' videos and yes, I'd tap that. She's not naturally very pretty but watch her in interviews early on in her career and she's not ugly either. Now she wears make-up that makes her look like a drag queen and it really doesn't help her cause when it comes to looking attractive - but I don't think she really gives a fuck. Not to mention her body is awesome.

Why is everyone so concerned about her appearence anyway? She makes music, she's not a model. Judge her on her music, I don't really see why her looks need to be brought up. I think it's cool that someone who doesn't have the stereotypical pop star beauty has been so successful in the industry. She has a different look to most but has proven you don't need to have the appearence of a model to be a highly successful pop singer.

Props to Guilha for recoginizing her ability as a pop singer though, despite not enjoying her music. You can't entirely credit her success to image. That's just short-sighted. Does it attract attention to her music? Of course. But if the music wasn't well-written for the genre of pop then people wouldn't listen to it. She's not successful just based on image, it just helps her remain in the spotlight. Stop clasping at straws. She's huge, like it or not.

Edit: It's not just pop music acts that attract attention through their look anyway. Hollywood Undead wear masks which help make them stand out. Slipknot do the same. Marilyn Manson stirred up huge controversy with his image. Loads of artists from multiple genres do it. To just pick on pop is narrow-minded.

^ Yes, that's true, but some genres need to be more careful and spend more money with their Image than others .. Like, while Pop bases much on the Image (talent aside), most Metal bands can probably not give a fuck about it (although, of course, they still have to worry a bit about it, but WAY less)

true, but take a look at GaGa/Eminem, for example. I think we can safely say they have sorta the same exposure now, since GaGa was in the center of the music world until Eminem came with "Recovery" and its "Not Afraid" and "dethroned her", but she still is under the spotlight ... Eminem, working on Hip Hop has to worry much less about the Image now than GaGa had, working in the Pop field

Eminem does have a lot of talent, he is one of my best rappers, but I think it is safe to say, he wouldn't be 'as big' if he was black (Not beig racist please). He came in and he was the first white rapper to have such talent but even that wasn't enough. He said things that causd controversies and this made his name known to a lot of people.


Flex, though Eminem because of his gimmick doesn't have to worry about his image 'much'. After this recovery album most things will be considered controvesial (if he says things he once said) because he turned a new leaf practically

^ Yes, but for Eminem to create that "gimmick" he did it more through his lyrics than through his look, while on the Pop side it's more the other way around
