Wings aim to have short memory
Wednesday, 05.06.2009 / 3:36 AM / Conference Semifinals: Detroit vs. Anaheim
By Eric Stephens - NHL.com Correspondent

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- In their run to a fourth Stanley Cup championship in 11 years last season, the Detroit Red Wings never trailed in any of their four series.

The last playoff series in which they trailed occurred in 2007, when they lost Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against Anaheim. The Ducks went on to close the series in the next game en route to their first Cup title.

Following a controversial 2-1 loss in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals at the Honda Center, the Red Wings are staring at a 2-1 deficit heading into a critical Game 4 of the past two Cup champions Thursday night.

"You can't get discouraged by a loss like this," Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "You just have to come back and play hard the next game. We've been in similar situations in the past.

"You have to respond as a team. You have to come back with another good effort. You have to have a short memory when you lose in the playoffs."

It was another tough night for the usually high-powered Red Wings. Even though they put 46 shots on goal, the only one that went in the net was by Henrik Zetterberg on the power play in the second period.

Zetterberg's goal was his first of the series. Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit's leading scorer during the regular season and a Hart Trophy finalist, went scoreless for the second consecutive game. Marian Hossa, the Red Wings' leading goal scorer, has yet to register a point.

Meanwhile, Anaheim center Ryan Getzlaf had an assist and has six points in the three games -- two more than Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Hossa combined.

"With a team like this, with the kind of firepower and offensive players that they have, if you play a good, solid defensive game, you're going to get your offensive opportunities," Ducks center Todd Marchant said.
