- The Calgary Flames reportedly are in the final stages of negotiations to sign Brent Sutter as their new coach. TSN says the hiring could become official as early as Tuesday.
Sutter stepped down as coach of the New Jersey Devils on June 9 despite having one year remaining on his contract. In order for Sutter to move to the Flames, New Jersey President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello would have to give his permission.
Sutter cited personal and family concerns as his reason for leaving the Devils. His family had remained in Red Deer, Alta., during his two seasons in New Jersey. Sutter also owns the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels and has a farm in Red Deer. Sutter's brother Darryl is the GM of the Flames and recently fired coach Mike Keenan after a disappointing first-round playoff loss.
Sutter compiled a 97-56-11 record in two seasons behind the bench in New Jersey. The Devils made the playoff both times and won the Atlantic Division title in 2008-09, but were unable to advance past the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in either season.
No surprised...at all. When Darryl said that all the good coaches were signed...then Brent resigned from Jersey...you knew something was going on. I don't know if its against the rules or anything if Lou wants to take action, but definitely an easy case to make when brothers are conspiring like this. | |
