Half blood prince beats Dark Knight from midnight showings

"In a massive start, Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” easily scored the biggest midnight gross of all-time in earning $22.2 million as it unspooled in 3,003 runs at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

That figure beats the $18 million earned in midnight runs by Warners’ very own “The Dark Knight” and the $17 million earned by 20th Century Fox’s “Star Wars: Episode III —Revenge of the Sith.”
“Half-Blood Prince” opens in the same Wednesday slot that “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” did in 2007. “Order of the Phoenix” grossed $12 million in midnight runs on its way to a $139.7 million five-day debut.
B.O. observers expect the boy—or rather, teenage—wizard to be as popular as ever, if not more so. It’s been two years since the last Potter pic, or the last book in J.K. Rowling’s series, creating a pent-up demand. Earlier this summer, Paramount’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” also opened on a Wednesday, grossed $16 million in midnight runs."

Anyone else think that Dark Knight's midnight gross record would only last a year?

Well, Harry Potter is not better than The Dark Knight, that's for sure, but I don't think any other film could beat the Harry Potter/Twilight kind of following.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is awesome though, lol.

I'm not surprised. Harry Potter has a lot of fans, and the movies are very good, it blows The Dark Knight out of the water, imo. So yea, not surprised.

I agree, I am not too surprised that Harry Potter is still enjoying extreme popularity. I haven't seen the film yet so I can't really compare it to the Dark Knight but I did enjoy TDK more than the most recent HP films I've seen (though I enjoyed them as well).

I saw Half Blood Prince today. Thought that The Dark Knight was way better. Half Blood Prince just seemed slower then the other movies and just wasn't as wizardry? Is that even a word? lol I still liked it though. Was way too long but I guess to get everything in there they had to do that. Hopefully the next movie is great.
