Subject: What was the downfall of ECW (The Extreme Years)? Sun Aug 23, 2009 12:41 pm
Hey guys,
I want to talk about something:
Now, every fan of the original ECW has been talking about this:
The Rise and Fall of ECW
I mean, ECW has been known for being a Top Company in Philadelphia, PA
ECW was the place where they introduced us to the likes of Rob Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer, The Dudleys, Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, the late Eddie Guerrero, Perry Saturn as well as WCW Alumnis Steve Austin, Mick Foley, Chris Benoit, the late Public Enemy and The Steiner Brothers
ECW has also given us "Simon Diamond" Pat Kenney, Al Snow, Rey Mysterio and even Raven and Steven Richards as well as New Jack
ECW was also the home to the Vixens such as Nancy Benoit alias Robin Greene, Tammy, Francine, Jazz, Amy Dumas also known as Miss Congeniality and of course, Dawn Marie
But also, ECW has been known for having its downfalls
Such as ECW fighting for financial survival
Paul Heyman has stated that ECW was the 1st victum of the Monday Night WAR
and also, Paul Heyman has been known being critisised by the likes of Eric Bischoff, Larry Zbyszko and Jim Cornette
Heyman and Bischoff have been enemies for years
Bischoff (along with Cornette) called Paul Heyman a liar and Heyman is also mad @ Bischoff for stealing ECW Talent and burying them in WCW
Larry Zbyszko has also called ECW ridiculous
and ECW was also removed from The NEW TNN when Vince McMahon put RAW and other WWE Programs such as Superstars and Livewire @ the time on The NEW TNN
Brother Ray from Team 3-D has also stated that they weren't getting paid enough money and a friend of mine told me that Paul Heyman was a smart booker, it's just that the problem he had was managing money.
and so, I would like to know:
What was the REAL Downfall of Extreme Championship Wrestling?
That's the Question!
Please share your thoughts on this.
Paul Heyman SHOOTS on The NEW TNN
Paul Heyman SHOOTS on Vince McMahon
Paul Heyman SHOOTS on Eric Bischoff, Edge and JBL
Here's an interview w/Larry Zbyszko on ECW
Jim Cornette on Paul Heyman

I think it was the money problem, vince actually kept ECW from going bankrupt. I also think that ECW got to big for it's own good. Guys could make better money in the WWE or WCW, after they made a name for themselves in ECW. The list of wrestlers that left for bigger and better thing is endless.
Another thing that was the down fall is that the WWE was still the top wrestling promotion. If you wanted to wrestle on the grandest stage, WWE was the place. Taz said himself, that is the reason he left. He said that it didn't have anything to do with money. He said that he was making great money in ECW.

The real downfall with ECW in my opinion is that they tried to compete with WWE and WCW when really everyone new they couldn't.

What killed ECW in the end is simple. It was TNN that ultimately killed ECW. They gave them such a small budget to work with that they spent so much of their own money making the show worth a damn. In the end they couldn't afford to keep paying workers, or to keep paying for the PPVs, hell they had a hard enough time selling the games that came out. In the end they had no more ideas they could use and the talent pool was running dry. They couldn't get anymore violent because of the TV deal, so they really had to try and rely on "wrestling" which was something a lot of them were terrible at. In the end we could point fingers, but you had at the time they died, so many promotions coming up. You had CZW, you had RoH, and ECW was national at this time. RoH offered the "wrestling" ECW could not, and CZW was more "extreme" then ECW.
In the end ECW was seen by the fans that loved them as becoming what WCW and WWF were. A sports entertainment company. Without the budget and the most marketable star being Rob Van Dam, ECW wasn't on the same scale and really weren't ready for the big time. They jumped to national shows to quickly, just like NWA Wildside did and it killed them in the end. The TV deal with TNA didn't help, but you add production costs with traveling expenses you're fucked. Think about it, WWE, WCW, and TNA all filmed in one place when they first started. ECW however did not film in one spot, they filmed in several spots, thus having to deal with production and traveling. Not to mention only a one million dollar budget to work with from TNN. They might of been financially stable before then, but it eventually ran out. It was a sad but true story, but it happens to the best of the promotions. There is just no way to compete unless you've got the top fucking dollar anymore. Period.

ROH wasn't even existing when ECW died. ECW folded in 2001 while RoH had its first show in October 2002.
