- The Toronto Blue Jays appear to have struck out in their attempt to sign highly-coveted Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman, according to multiple reports.
On Sunday Yahoo Sports reported Chapman had agreed to a five-year, $30 million deal with a National League team believed to be the Reds.
MLB.com also reported that the team involved is the Reds.
The Boston Red Sox were the first to bid on Chapman with an initial $15.5 million offer in early December, while the Blue Jays reportedly offered him $23 million.
The Marlins also reportedly offered him a deal in the $16 million range.
In the NL, the Marlins, Mets, Nationals and Astros were also after Chapman, but it appeared he would be heading to an American League team before Yahoo's report on Sunday.
Completely out of the blue and I can't believe the Reds actually paid $30 million for this kid. He's got a good arm, but his make-up is being questioned and they're paying him $30 million when he's probably expected to just play in the minors for a couple years first. | |
