Report: CC Sabathia signs 160 million contract

LAS VEGAS -- CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees were closing in Wednesday on a seven-year contract worth about US$160 million, a deal that would be a record for a pitcher.

The Yankees and the pitcher's agents had not yet reached a letter of agreement, a baseball official familiar with the talks said Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because a deal had not yet been finalized.

The official said the Yankees were confident an agreement would soon be reached.

Sabathia's deal will top the previous mark for a pitcher, a $137.5-million, six-year contract agreed to by Johan Santana and the New York Mets last winter.

Among all players, it will trail Alex Rodriguez's $252-million, 10-year agreement with Texas, A-Rod's $275-million, 10-year deal with the Yankees and Derek Jeter's $189-million, 10-year contract with the Yankees, ending up in the same area as Manny Ramirez's $160-million, eight-year contract with Boston.

Signing Sabathia was the No. 1 off-season priority for the Yankees, whose streak of 13 consecutive playoff appearances ended this year. He would join a rotation that includes Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain.

New York hopes to re-sign Andy Pettitte, who also is a free agent, and has had talks this week with Ben Sheets and the agents for A.J. Burnett.

Looks like money talks once again. To have Sabathia as the third highest paid player in baseball already seems ridiculous (don't even get me started on Jeter being second) and it seems pretty obvious that the Yankees are overpaying on purpose to try and inflate the prices. When your next best competitor only offers 100 million, why not go with 110 instead 160.

Thats just way too much. This makes it un fair to every other tesam in the league because not many teams can afford it. I find it sick thta players have to play for huge amounts like that. I mean hell, with that kind of money he might be ale to buy a pro sports team. I mean 160 million is a lot.

But I'm glad he signed to the Yankess, cause the Yankees rock with Jeter, Sabathia and A-Rod

Jeter probably is the most overrated, and I fail to see why everybody in New York likes to see him as a god on the field.

Chances are most of us will never see that money even anywhere remotely close to that in our life, yet he'll get it in 7 years.
The amount sports stars get paid shits me, I mean, I understand that they get more, and don't care, but 160 million? that's crap, and the entire world is in a financial meltdown...it's bullcrap.

What he gets is way to much for playing a sport or for any kind of job for that matter.
I find it ridiculous how much money sports players get right now. I don't know how it was for baseball before, but when Maurice Richard was playing hockey, he needed to work another job too to support his family. So he obviously wasn't getting that much. But 160$ millions? Sabathia doesn't need that much to support himself
