Update on Rey Mysterio's WWE Contract Negotiations

Jason Powell of Prowrestling.net is reporting that Rey Mysterio and WWE are still in somewhat of a stalemate regarding contract negotiations. Rey's deal is set to expire in the Spring of 2009, and up until a few weeks ago it appeared that a new deal would be signed rather quickly. However, due to issues like merchandising and contract length, there appears to be a delay in what would otherwise be an immediate re-signing. WWE wants Rey to sign a 5 year deal with the company, whereas Rey only wants to sign a 3 year deal. More on this story as it unfolds.

Wow...WWE is the one that wants to sign a longer term deal with an injury riddled superstar? Seems totally backwards to me...

He's Rey Rey. EVERYONE loves Rey Rey. I'd hire him for a lifelong contract if I were wwe and he agreed!

Thing is when a superstar is out for so long, how much can they really sell. How many fans will come to the stadium wanting to buy a Rey Rey mask if they know he'll never show. If they are trying to sign him to 5 years because of merchandise, they need to keep him involved somehow even if he doesn't wrestle.

Well he ain't gonna be out solid for five years is he? He'll be wrestling each year, even if it isn't for long.

Even if he's out for half of the time (which doesn't seem to unreasonable seeing his recent injury problems), you're basically talking about paying this guy double for what he's worth when he actually does wrestle. If the deal was 5 years 25 million say (5 million per year), and he only wrestles 2.5 of those 5 years, you're basically paying this guy 10 million each year that he wrestles. At that point, you have to wonder whether he's worth that 10 million when he gets in the ring.

^ As I said before, he sells a lot of merchandise. Along with John Cena, he's one of the best for it. I reckon he makes WWE loads of cash.
